About

Mary Sumaya
MA, LPC-R, NCC

Hey there! I’m a Virginia native, a military spouse, a mom, a gamer, a bookworm, and now—a Resident in Counseling (because apparently, I just can’t resist collecting titles). In 2019, my life leveled up in the biggest way possible—I became a mom. While I was thrilled to welcome my daughter, I also found myself in the boss battle known as postpartum anxiety and depression. And just when I thought I was getting the hang of things, the COVID-19 pandemic swooped in like a plot twist no one asked for. It was… a lot.But here’s the thing—going through that chaos made me realize just how much new parents (and their families) need support. Once I found my way through those challenges, I knew I wanted to help others who might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just plain lost in the fog of life. That’s why I became a counselor—to create a space where you can unpack your thoughts, navigate your struggles, and gain clarity without judgment. Think of therapy as a self-care side quest—it’s not just for the tough times, but for anyone looking to grow, heal, and level up in life. So, whether you’re facing a big life change, working on personal growth, or just need someone to help you untangle the mental spaghetti, I’m here for you. Let’s sort it out together and get you moving forward with confidence!

What can I expect?

I'm sure you've seen the guy lying on the couch pouring his heart out to a therapist who seems completely uninterested, throwing out an "uh huh" and "How does that make you feel?" That actually is a type of therapy model. You may have heard of Sigmund Freud at some point; he introduced this idea of laying down. While it's not very popular today, it's the scene perpetually used in movies and tv shows.Therapy is a very personal experience. Since you're doing therapy at home, pick a place that brings you comfort and allows you to speak freely. Even if it means laying on your back. Your experience won't be like anyone else's because therapy is not one size fits all.We spend the first session just getting to know each other and going over required forms such as confidentiality and your reasons for coming. We will set a goal or two to monitor progress. From there, each session will begin with a check in and then, the work starts.

Do you Prescribe Medication?

No, I do not have the licensure or medical training to prescribe or refill prescriptions.However...If you would like me to work with your prescriber and collaborate on treatment planning, let's talk about it!I do have a general knowledge and understanding of psychopharmacology (aka medication & mental health), so I can absolutely provide support and education.Medication AND Therapy are more effective together
